Students occasionally engage in deviant activity on phones and computers, such as cyberbullying, harassment, sexting, sending nude pictures, or communicating inappropriately with adults. It is not always clear whether and how schools should intervene.

While students' deviant phone and online behavior usually occurs outside of school, it can lead to later problems in school.

Parents also frequently turn to school police, counselors, and administration when they catch their child involved in deviant phone and online behavior, and they expect school staff to do something.
