1. Read the Overview to learn what you will experience and the Learner Outcomes to learn what you should be able to do when you complete this week's work.
2. Complete the Readings and explore the resources listed on the Course Assignments and Activities Table in the course syllabus. Be sure to complete these items before you proceed to the From the Expert pages.
3. Watch the video in the From the Expert pages, and, as appropriate, follow any instructions there.
4. Participate in the Discussions, which your facilitator will post and you can access by selecting the "Discussions" tab. Please review the Discussion Forum Participation section of the Course Overview for posting due dates and the Discussion Forum Participation Rubric.
5. Complete the Assignments listed below. See your syllabus for the specific points or percentages for each assignment and due dates.
Assignments
Assignment 1: Discussion
Join your classmates in the forum discussion for this week. Address the following questions and post your responses to the Discussion Forum titled for this activity by the date specified by your facilitator.
Review all of your peers' responses. Reply to two or more of your peers' responses providing substantive feedback or comments. Check back throughout the week to continue the discussion.
Discussion Question 1:
Go to "simile-widgets.org" and select one of the links on the right (Exhibit, Timeline, Timeplot, or Runway). Look at the visualization it created. Then click on one of the More Live Examples underneath the visualization that is on that page. Prepare a paragraph that discuss the following:
1. Which dataset did you chose?
2. What story did you want the visualization to tell?
3. How effective was the visualization in telling that story?
4. How effective was the visualization in helping you better understand the data? Discuss your experience with the class.
Discussion Question 2:
What are some of the issues that organizations need to be aware of when designing and managing data?
Assignment 2: Written Assignment - Emerging Technologies Paper
Identify an emerging technology that has the potential to assist a business and IT to operate more efficiently and effectively. Summarize the technology in a 3-5 page paper.
You may choose to select a technology that has recently been implemented in your own organization (e.g., database, Intranet, application) or choose a technology that you believe would benefit your current organization.
Your technology selection should be focused on a business solution rather than a personal type of technology. This is a research paper which means you need sources cited and referenced.
