Analytical Research Paper: Behind the Beautiful Forevers

Your research term paper: Geography of World Regions (Fall 2017) is a research paper that will showcase your ability to think critically about the geographical issues in a novel format. The basic parameters of the assignment are as follows:

1. Content: You will write a review paper that explores the geographic themes in your chosen book. This paper should examine the ways that geography influences the story being told in the text. Your paper should engagea range of thetopics that we have discussed in class; place, space, gender issues, development, colonialism, ethnic conflicts, war, and many others. I would recommend picking three or four of these sub-themes to explore in greater detail (e.g. additional, external research).Your paper should use the narrative of the book as a ‘framing device' (i.e. demonstrate how the geographical feature that you are discussing occurs in the context of the narrative), but then go beyond that narrative to explore the geographic theme in greater detail through additional research. I want you to demonstrate that you understand the importance of theme in the book and then develop a deeper account of that theme through your research. You should go beyond the way the theme is used in the book, drawing onacademic and popular sources to provide context for your theme.

2. Structure of the Paper: Your papers should be constructed as research papers and include an introduction, thesis, supporting evidence and conclusion. Your paper should be about 7-10 pages long and engage the material addressed in your presentation. Papers will be typed using 1.5line spacing for editing sake. I will expect these papers to be academic in construction (e.g. using sources that are included in a ‘Works Cited' section). I also expect that you will use a significant number of academic sources (10 minimum) which will include published research articles, books, and book chapters among others. You may also use popular sources as appropriate (BBC, New York Times,etc).

Additional points include:

a. Keep your writing academic. Do not slip into informal language. Use the language in your text as a model.

b. Ensure that your writing structure is organized (i.e. Intro, several sections of review and analysis of relevant material and a conclusion with your personal thoughts and discussion).

c. Works Cited: The bibliography should be formatted in Chicago Style with internal citation to ensure that you are familiar with these common styles. If you have questions you can find numerous handbooks and examples on line. DoNOTuse web-based sourceslike or in your paper, but you may use them as a source for identifying other academic resources.

d. Other sources: Feel free to use both academic and journalistic articles to bolster your discussion. You need to provide an analysis of your theme based on existing sources (e.g. CIA Factbook, news stories, and rigorous non-academic research), butyou should also expand further by developing your own thoughts in the analysis and conclusions sections of your paper.
