Scott Thompson, who was made CEO of Yahoo in March 2012, stated on his résumé that he has an accounting and computer science degree from Stonehill College, earned in 1979. However, Stonehill College did not offer a degree in computer science until the early 1980s. Mr. Thompson had carried the degree information on his résumé for some time, including during his time as an executive at Paypal. One of Yahoo’s investors, the hedge fund, Third Point, uncovered the information and pointed out that the company’s website as well its SEC 10K report included the information about the computer science degree. Mr. Thompson says that Third Point’s CEO, Daniel Loeb, has a “personal vendetta” against him. Discuss the ethical issues.
