The use of 24-hour lighting and feed systems to mass-produce chickens is a dangerous practice. Chickens grow twenty times the natural rate and are so imbalanced that they cannot even walk. They do not even have room: their cages are too small. The conditions that chickens live in are horrific, but they do not tend to get sick and die at the rates that we would expect. There are overwhelming amounts of antibiotics put in their feed, but some chickens still die. Eight billion chickens are slaughtered each year in the US, most living in highly mechanized lighting and feed systems. What should we do? What can we do?
