COLLAPSE
In the Native American story "Yellow Woman and Beauty of the Spirit", a native American girl who is 1/8th white tells of her experiences in the Laguna Pueblo Reservation. She mentions how she doesn't look like the rest of the children, and how some tourists at her school didn't want her in their pictures because she looked too white. She was embarrassed about this because in the Pueblo religion, she says "A person's value lies in how that person interacts with other people" (Silko, 232), and not in their physical appearance. She also tells of how humans must have respect for the animals of the earth, as well, because in this religion, the "Mother Creator" made everything in the world: the people, plants, animals, water - all of which have spirits. And, because the creator is female, there is not a lesser status assigned to women. Each person is seen as a mixture of male and female, and the balance of each is always changing.
In religious ceremonies, men dress as women in order to pay respect to the female energies of the spirit beings. In the Pueblo religion, old stories are passed down about Kochininako (Yellow Woman) who represents all women and how her courage and sensuality benefitted her people. For example, she falls in love with the Buffalo Man, so the Buffalo People giver humans their bodies to feed the Pueblo people so they don't starve. In another story, she has a relationship with "Whirlwind Man", and the twin sons she has from this liason become great heroes.
In Pueblo religious teachings, a female Creator is featured, which give equal status for women and men, and women appear as often as men do as heroes in their legends. And this idea of a female being the creator mirrors the physical reality of the female of each species being the one who gives life.
