Rules are laws that are set up by the teacher inside the classroom that have consequences for those who don't obey them. It is important that the educator introduces the classroom rules to the students on the first day of school. Rules consist of a discipline plan or policy for the students to become familiar with. The educator needs to discuss with the students what the rules are, the consequences of the rules, and how to follow the rules in the classroom. Presenting and going over the rules is a way for students to become aware of the do's and don't's in the classroom. The educator should display the rules up inside of the classroom as will as a a written piece of paper for the students and their parents to see. Rules allow the students to become aware of what the classroom expectations are. Examples:

• Be respectful to others
• Be prepared to work
• Keep your hands and feet to yourself
• Listen and follow directions
• Walk and not run
• No talking in the hallway

A procedure is an order or a way you want the students to do inside of the classroom and how they will go about to do it. Without a procedure it is most likely that you will have an uncontrollable classroom. There are three components into to establishing a good procedure:

1. Establishing a routine
2. Creating list of steps for the students to follow
3. Explain, demonstrate, and practice with the students on how you want them to follow through with the class procedures. Examples of procedures:

• Wash your hands as you enter the classroom
• Always have your pencil and paper handy
• Always put your name on your paper.

Procedures are important to introduce to the students in order for the students to become familiar with the routiines of the classroom.

Both rules and procedures are valuable tools to use as part of having an effective classroom. Teachers should consider creating rules and procedures for the classroom.
