Assaults against children could include the use of a belt buckle to hit the child as a form of punishment, burning the child, scalding the child with hot water and many more. Child molestation is also another form of child abuse. Munchausen syndrome by proxy is a syndrome that is had by the parent or guardian of a child. With this syndrome, the parent fabricates the symptoms of disease to undergo medical tests, hospitalization or even surgical treatment to bring attention to themselves. With the internet becoming so extremely popular, child pornography is not the only threat to children on the internet. The use of cyber enticement through social media cites, instant messaging, e-mail communications and gaming connections can lure an unsuspecting child into sexual contact with a pedophile. Most of the youth involved in these activities were girls aged 14-17 and about 75% of the time the person luring the child in asked them to meet them in person. In July of 2007 Myspace announced that it had found and deleted nearly 29,000 profiles linked to sex offenders.

There are many crimes against children and they fall under the category of child abuse, sexual abuse, murder, abduction and neglect. Forms of child abuse include beating, burning, and verbal/mental/psychological abuse (although the last type is not actually a crime, it should be). Sexual abuse with a child victim is a type of crime against children, and includes rape, molestation, indecent exposure, child pornography, and sex tourism. The internet has been used by child pornographers to reach a bigger audience, to connect with more like-minded sick individuals, and to reach a bigger market place. The internet is also used by child molesters to find victims, and to find child pornography. Predators have easy access to names and addresses of potential victims, and can use the internet to establish rapport with potential victims. These potential victims may become victims through the use of sexual conversation online, or by actually setting up a meet in person. Additionally, the internet has been used for child prostitution and solicitation (Swanson et al., 2012, p. 327). In addition to being used by child pornographers and predators, the internet is also used as a way to socialize, and within this world of socialization exists easier methods to bully. Cyberbullying is harassment by one person toward another using the internet as the communication method. This can be done via social media, chat rooms, or text messaging.
