The path goal model theory is a theory that is based on identifying a leader style that would best benefit the work place environment and the employee to get the job done. (House, Mitchell, 1974) The goal based on this theory is to increase job satisfaction.

We all know that in the workplace there are different leaders with different leadership styles and sometimes it's not right for the environment. So this theory is about figuring out with leadership style fits what environment best to achieve the goal that is set out.

Yes we know that the ideas work because these ideas have been developed. There are certain steps that you have to take when performing these theory. The steps that are said to be taken are

1.Determine the employee and environmental characteristics

2.Select a leadership style

3.Focus on motivational factors that will help the employee succeed (path-goal leadership theory, 2013)

After taking these steps you will be able to identify which type of leadership will go better with different types of environments.

Paul Hersey and Kenneth H. Blanchard along with Ohio State staff analyzed leaders in action and determined the actions could be categorized as "Task Behavior and Relationship Behavior".

The study revealed the relationship between the level of relationship behavior and the amount of task behavior amounted to various leadership styles based on the situation. Hershey and Blanchard (1988) found that tasks behaviors in combinations of (a) high relationship and low task, (b) high relationship and high task, (c) low relationship and low task, and (d) low relationship and high task determined the situational leadership.

Situational leadership is also determined by the relationship behavior of the leader with the follower that varies in stages from delegating to participating to selling to telling.

Leaders vary in style, trait and behavior and tasks vary in resources and objectives; therefore, different leadership styles are required to mirror the situation. According to David Goleman, leadership that gets results requires different leadership styles just a golfer needs different clubs for the different shots to win tournaments. There are practical and strategic recommendations to be successful leaders.

Effective leaders identify and invest in their strengths (Rath& Conchie, 2008). Effective leaders with the best results never rely on one leadership style (Goleman, 2000). Lastly, research recommends leaders determine which leadership style is appropriate based on the follower and the task.
