Research Paper Assignment

Chapter 5

Use of the textbook and external research to support your points and information attained relative to nonverbal communication and gestures along with effective listening skills as it relates to your country of study.

1. Identify a country to research (Do not use United States). Begin your presentation with an over view of the culture of the country you have chosen (this will require research).

2. Discuss the interpretation of certain non-verbal gestures of that country and what would be considered appropriate and inappropriate in that country.

3. Discuss the use of power distance and personal space that is important in the culture you are studying.

4. What is typical about status symbols in this country? What do status symbols reflect in this culture you are studying?

5. Research and examine information about listening skills that relate to the country you are studying.

Discuss the physical, personal, gender, semantic, and technology barriers that may exist in listening when dealing with individuals within this country (please be sure to support with information based on your research).

6. What key piece stands out to you in how to approach a business transaction in this particular country and culture?

What is significant that a company would need to know/understand when conducting business in this country as it relates to customs, effective listening, and non-verbal messages in business transactions?

How would you go about transferring your knowledge of the culture you studied into a business transaction?

(This should be very thorough and reflect your research along with concepts within the textbook to support your analysis and recommendations)

7. It is critical that you cite your sources within and at the end of your paper. Any factual information or ideas taken directly from a source must be internally cited immediately after the sentence that includes that information. Your paper should be in APA format (use the link at the beginning of the course to assist you). Be sure to discuss the concepts of the chapter within your work and your findings. Your first page should have the title of your presentation, your name, and the class on it. Your last page should be your works cited page.

Post your research paper as a word file. Keep in mind that research is written in the 3rd person (do not use "I" or "my" in your paper. Your paper should be minimally 3 pages long (without the cover page or works cited page). Make sure to cite your sources use within and at the end of your work.

Chapter 6: Anxiety, Technology, and other communication obstacles.

Make a list of all the technology (such as social media sites, You Tube, and email) that you use or you are aware of that are used to communicate: (a) with friends and family, (b) in class and training situations, and (c) in the workplace. Rank the communication effectiveness of each technology using a scale from 1 (extremely ineffective) to 7 (extremely effective). Select the most successful and least successful technology in each of the three situations and share specific problems and successes using them.

Was there an overlap of most and least effective technologies across the three areas? Why or why not?

Select one of the ineffective technologies and briefly discuss ways to that communication could be improved using it. Be sure to support your analysis and discussion with concepts from the chapter citing the textbook internally and at the end of your work.

Chapter 4 introduces us to Effective Listening

Conduct research using the internet that discusses and examines the development of listening skills. Based on what you found in your research; briefly (and thoroughly) discuss the following:

Identify through your research; the causes of poor listening and the costs of poor listening habits

Identify and discuss the attitude and behavioral changes toward listening that have occurred over the past decades

How can individuals improve professional and interpersonal relationships through changes in attitude and behavior changes towards listening.

Be sure to cite your sources within and at the end of your work. Please post this as a word document; font 12 double spaced, APA format (use link at the beginning of the course to assist. Be sure to incorporate concepts from the chapter into your work.
