RESEARCH FUNDAMENTALS

Competency 2000.1.10: Literature Review The graduate describes the purpose for a literature review and develops an organized literature review relevant to educational research topics, problems, and questions.

Introduction:

In this task, you will identify an appropriate research problem and conduct a review of the literature. You will develop your research problem statement into a purpose statement, along with specific research questions and, when appropriate, hypothesis statements. You will then write your literature review using APA style.

A literature review is a narrative exposition of research literature as it is related to a proposed or already conducted research study. Unlike an annotated bibliography, the literature review is written in narrative form and only the relevant information from the sources is included. Examples of a review of the literature are seen in the first section of most journal articles.

Note: In research, the words "source" and "resource" are used interchangeably. For this task, "source" refers to the individual articles or published materials you are using. The word "resources" refers to where you found the source (e.g., electronic database or a book).

Requirements:

A. Identify an educationrelated research topic of interest to you.

1. Create a research problem statement that addresses the research topic.

Note: The research topic and research problem can come from task 1, but you will need to ensure that your research topic and problem are appropriately narrow and specific (i.e., could be completed within one school year).

Note: You will need to review scholarly sources related to your research topic and research problem in order to complete parts C-E.

B. Develop a purpose statement for your research, based on the research problem statement and a review of relevant literature that communicates the intent or objectives of the research.

C. Develop two research questions that adhere to the following guidelines:

• appropriate to one of the major research approaches (i.e., quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, or action)
• researchable (i.e., you can collect and analyze data to answer it)
• directly focused on and addressing the research problem statement

1. Develop a measurable hypothesis or explain why a hypothesis is not needed for each research question.

2. Justify which major research approach (i.e., quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, or action) you would recommend using to answer each research question.

D. Develop a narrative literature review based on fifteen scholarly sources, ten of which are peerreviewed journal articles. This literature review should adhere to the following guidelines:

• include relevant sources
• flow logically from the broadly defined problem to more specific research questions

E. Create a reference list that includes all references in APA format.

Task stream

Note: When using sources to support ideas and elements in an assessment, the submission MUST include APA formatted intext citations with a corresponding reference list for any direct quotes or paraphrasing. It is not necessary to list sources that were consulted if they have not been quoted or paraphrased in the text of the assessment.

Note: No more than a combined total of 30% of a submission can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from outside sources, even if cited correctly. For tips on using APA style, please refer to the APA Handout web link included in the APA Guidelines section.
