Mario has just been released from prison for a felony conviction for selling drugs in his neighborhood. He served three years of a five-year sentence and has been released early in a special program in his state for first time convictions for nonviolent offenses. Mario is 22 years old, did not complete high school, and now has a felony on his re¬cord which makes finding employment difficult.You are a Human Services worker in a county probation and parole office, and you have been assigned to work with Mario.

Janet is a 4 I -year-old military veteran who did two tours in Iraq and one tour in Afghanistan. She is married and the mother of a 13-year-old son, Edward. Her hus¬band, Robert, is a retired military as well and was the primary caregiver for Edward while she served time in the Middle East. Both Janet and Robert receive military pensions. Robert is also responsible for two teenage children from a previous mar¬riage. He sends child support to his ex-wife on a regular basis. Since she has returned home from Afghanistan, Janet has been having difficulty with Edward. He is sassy, doesn't do his homework when she asks, and in general seems disinterested in lis¬tening to her. Janet is also experiencing PTSD, with periods of anxiety and flashbacks to her time in Afghanistan where she suffered injuries from a roadside attack. She is trying to deal with her own issues, but she is so tired and not able to sleep.The prob¬lems with Edward are just additional burdens on her, and she Finds herself screaming at him after school. Robert does not have the same issues with Edward, and although he has spoken with Edward about his disobedience, he has also spoken with Janet indicating that her personal problems are an issue. She calls to make an appointment at the mental health center where you are the Human Services worker. She indicates in the call that she wants some counseling for her son because he is out of control. During the conversation, she mentions that she thinks she may have a touch of PTSD and this is making it difficult for her to handle her teenage son.
