Read the article "Shitty First Drafts" by Anne Lamott, and complete the following:

1. Write a short summary of the article (about 3 sentences). You do not need to use page numbers for this assignment. The purpose of this assignment is practicing summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting accurately, using in-text citations that are smoothly integrated into your writing.

  • Introduce the summary with a signal phrase.
  • You may incorporate a brief quote (a few words), but the summary should be mostly in your own words.
  • Follow the definition and guidelines for summaries in Chapter 9. Remember that a summary briefly states the main point. It includes the main ideas but leaves out the details.

1. Next write a paraphrase of this section of Paragraph 5:

Then I'd stop, remember to breathe, make a few phone calls, hit the kitchen and chow down. Eventually I'd go back and sit down at my desk, and sigh for the next ten minutes. Finally I would pick up my one-inch picture frame, stare into it as if for the answer, and every time the answer would come: all I had to do was to write a really shitty first draft of, say, the opening paragraph. And no one was going to see it.

  • Introduce the paraphrase with a signal phrase.
  • Provide enough context for the paraphrase so that it makes sense to someone who didn't just read the article.
  • Again, you may incorporate a brief quote, but most of the paraphrase should be in your own words.
  • Follow the definition and guidelines for paraphrasing in Chapter 9. Remember that a paraphrase includes the details. It should be roughly the same length as the passage.

1. Quote four different parts of the article using each of the four methods from the Integrating Quotations video.

  • Make sure the quotes are integrated smoothly using each method. Provide sufficient context so the reader can understand how the quote fits in to what is being said.
  • The four methods are
  • Option 1: Introduce the quotation with a complete sentence and a colon.
  • Option 2: Use an introductory or explanatory phrase that is not a complete sentence, separated from the quotation by a comma.
  • Option 3: Make the quotation a part of your own sentence without any extra punctuation.
  • Option 4: Use short quotations-only a few words-as part of your own sentence.
