Read “World and Screen” by Nicholas Carr. Answer all questions.

1. On the second page the author writes, “Map reading, research has shown, strengthens our sense of place…” Explain in your own words what he means. Do you agree? Why or why not?

2. Carr borrows two terms from the work of anthropologist Tim Ingold: wayfaring and transport. In your own words, what is the key distinction between these two things? How is that distinction important to Carr’s argument?

3. Nicholas Carr argues that satellite navigation systems “are not designed to deepen our involvement with our surroundings.” What does he mean by that? Is he persuasive?

4. How do you get around in the world? When navigating a new place, do you use a map? A GPS device? Landmarks, or street signs, or something else? Reflect on you preferences. How do they contribute (or not) to your feeling comfortable in your surroundings?
