Retail Trade Analysis

Benson & Benson Retail, Inc., is a large successful retail and grocery chain based the North East region. It is formulating a 7-year expansion plan. It is interested in diversifying its business to related retail industries by acquisition or expanding its geographical presence by opening new chains in other states where there is no presence of David. You have been requested to conduct a market research for the expansion plan. Specifically, you need to identify which retail industry is promising in which state or region in the United States and will present your study to your supervisor and the CEO. You have downloaded the retail trade census data in 2007 from U.S. Census Bureau (http://www.census.gov/retail/) and are about to analyze it.

1. Sort the records by state (in the ascending order) and by sales (in the descending order) so that one can see which industry is largest in each state.

2. At the right of the table, add two columns to show a) per capita industry sales (sales divided by population) and b) sales per firm (sales divided by firm). Format cells in a way that displays amounts in a currency format and with two decimal digits.

3. Based on Q2, find the five states among all states that have the largest per capita major household appliances sales, in order to figure out which market would be most promising for a new appliance retail store. Highlight these five states in Red. Delete all the other industry sales data from the worksheet.

4. Create a worksheet that displays the number of firms between 1500 and 3000 in "Light Green with Yellow Text." Do not delete any record.

5. Using AutoFilter, create a worksheet that displays the sales data of men's, women's, and children's wear in East and West Midwest region. Do not delete any record.
