Race, Gender & the Digital Age Final: Exam Questions

Requirements: You will answer 4 essay/short answer questions. In formulating your answers, you do not need to include an intro and conclusion but you will use full sentences.

Point form will not be accepted. No exam aids are permitted in the room, you will be given one exam booklet, and 2 hours to complete the test. These are not opinion questions.

All of your answers must draw on class material and capture all elements of the major debates for each class and study. Develop your answers as thoroughly as you can.

The questions are:

1. In the documentary The Codes of Gender, SutJhally alludes to "doing" gender. Fully explain what it means to "do" gender and what the ramifications are.

Additionally, fully explain what it means to "undo" gender. Draw on the Chesley reading and the video clip that we watched in formulating your answer. You do not need to know the name of the study nor the characteristics of the sample, but be able to describe the findings in your answer.

2. Tim Wise alludes to the idea that race is not natural. What does he mean by this? Additionally, thoroughly define his notion of "[white] privilege", discussing how it not only has material benefits, but also psychological benefits for certain people.

3. In applying Jhally and Chesley's notion of "doing" to the documentary Triple Hate, what does it mean to "do" race? How is race "done" in the documentary and what are the ramifications of this? Use specific examples from the movie.

4. In "Playing The Sims2: An Exploration of Gender Differences in Players' Motivations and Patterns of Play", the authors posit that online questionnaires have distinct advantages when examining gender and online technology-use. What are the distinct advantages of administering an online questionnaire, according to the authors?
