The insistent off-beat rhythmic pattern of soul music and rock'n'roll would find a strange and unique expression in reggae music during the late 1960s and early 1970s" (Anderson). Anderson states that reggae developed from the backbeat of ska. Ska was fully developed by the end of the mid-1960s and was based on a double-time version of basic R & B patterns.
