The essay portion of the CCA examination focuses upon your ability to synthesize learning experiences into coherent critical essays demonstrating knowledge regarding a context and writing prompt. You are not expected to produce novel research or cite sources while completing the examination. Nonetheless, your performance should focus upon the careful construction of a well-planned critical essay demonstrating your knowledge while addressing the prompt. Note, your goal is to demonstrate your knowledge as part of a critical essay.

You will be offered five writing prompts. You are to address three of the five essay prompts.

Your essays should be clear, concise, and complete. The general guideline is that the average well-thought out response requires about five to seven pages(without cover, title and reference pages).

Essays are graded using the following criteria:

• Content-essays must respond to the scenario and writing prompt while demonstrating a command of knowledge and practices in the field surrounding the writing prompt.

• Critical thinking-essays must demonstrate the ability to analyze the writing prompt, synthesize a perspective, and either deduce or infer valid conclusions.

Essay #1

Evaluating the performance of a company often relies upon ratio analysis. Ratios emerge from three categories: (a) turnover ratios; (b) profitability ratios; and (c) leverage or liquidity ratios. List at least two ratios from each category and explain how they differ within and between categories. Synthesize a strategy as to evaluate the performance of a company using the listed ratios and a suitable horizontal and/or vertical analysis. Justify the use of the selected ratios and critique your proposed strategy.

Essay #2

Thirty American cities faced chaos as their fast food chains grappled with a strike over low wages. Although workers received the federally mandated minimum wage of $8.25 per hour, workers claimed it was not a living wage. Additionally, the strikers issued a statement that $16 per hour would be barely enough to work and live in their neighborhoods. The fast food industry replied, in a public statement, that nearly doubling wages would be "bad for business and pass costs onto customers." Further, they asserted that several franchises pay $9 per hour although studies showed such a wage allowed a family only about $20 per day as to survive. Neither side, workers nor corporations, heard the other-leading to layoffs and massive costs associated with training new hires as to replace the lost workers.

Why were communications difficult during the strike? Explain how barriers existed within the scenario and how corporate leaders may have overcome them. Also, why do strong emotions emerge during organizational change? How can corporate leaders forge such emotions into emotional bonds allowing them to resolve the strike?

You are promoted to an internet service provider (ISP) quality analysis team upon completing the DBA program. Your promotion requires you survive the 90-day evaluation period as to become fully tenured. Your first task is to figure out why there are so many customers complaining about the responsiveness of their internet connection.

The term responsiveness does not have a clearly defined meaning although it is an important quality perceived by customers. Identify three variables involved with responsiveness, operationalize them, and determine how to measure them along their dimensions. Argue for the relevance, operationalization, measurement, and dimension of the three variables. Further, argue how your variables interact as to allow a measurement of responsiveness.

Vertical and horizontal markets are commonplace in media, healthcare, and computer software sectors. For example, Warner Bros Entertainment is an example of a vertical media company because it owns all stages of media production-from creation, filming, post-processing, and all the small companies leading to a showing at a movie theatre. Conversely, Sony is an example of a horizontal company due to its history of merging with competitors in the same industry, such as Zenith Corporation.

Identify one horizontal and one vertical e-commerce company. Explain the marketing strategy of both firms given their identification as either vertical or horizontal. You are a consultant hired by a medium sized company with 20 employees and a not much cash. Although the company has over 30 years of profitable operations, they express interest in buying one of their component suppliers. The component supplier is roughly the same size of the company, has about the same number of employees, but has a little more cash on hand. Further, the component supplier is a family operated business with two shareholders that would like to become managers after acquisition.
