Course Description

This course provides students with a systems-centric view to explore what is seen as today's best practices in product recalls in manufacturing and retail. There appears to be no one standard set of practices or steps to follow for recalls. Each time a recall is voluntary or is issued by a company or the government, different procedures seem to be followed. This course will examine case studies of recalls from the food and beverage industry, consumer electronics, automotive, toys, and home appliances and furniture. The student will examine these cases to discover a set of procedures or steps that are common and those that are unique. This course is intended for students and professionals working in reverse logistics, retail business management, general management, transportation management, supply chain management, and corporate and military decision makers.

Course Scope

This course is designed for exploratory research in to various practices in product and manufacturing recalls. Students will gain a basic understanding of product and manufacturing recall standards as well as procedures through research and discussion.

Course Objectives

The course will explore issues relating to product and manufacturing recall practices. The student will learn the fundamentals, which include relevant terminology, as well as investigating these particular practices in various industries. After completing the course, the student should be able to:

LO-1 Define product recall and give examples.

LO-2 Discuss the characteristics of the recalls in various industries

LO-3 Discuss the effects of product recalls on an organization.

LO-4 Describe the ways organizations have handled various recalls.

LO-5 Describe the phases of the recall process (i.e. before, during, and after).

LO-6 Discuss the involvement of logistic systems relating to product or manufacturing recalls.

LO-7 Identify reasons for product recalls increasing in the U.S.

LO-8 Discuss organizational procedures in responding to a government agency calling for a recall.
