Question: I. Student Observation of the Baby

Describe this baby and his/her behavior in several paragraphs, including age and appearance. Describe everything the baby did while you were there. How does this baby compare to the norms of development for a baby his/her age? (use norms in textbook): Describe how mom and baby relate to each other.

II. Research question: (read Berger 186-193)

a. List the universal sequence of development of language from birth to age 2.Use textbook for reference and list all specific milestones of language development from birth to 2 years. (use the chart-p. 187) Where does your baby fit into that sequence?

b. Receptive language: Give an example of words the baby understands and give evidence.

c. Expressive language: Give an example of how this baby communicates (other than crying). What words does s/he use? Does s/he put words together? Give examples (if applicable).

d. How does the parent communicate with the baby? (Does s/he use child-directed speech)?

III. Reflection: How did this interview give you new insights or reinforce what you read and learned from classroom discussion or from your own experience?

The reflection is your opportunity to give your personal reactions. Please use this as a chance to share what you personally have learned. If you have your own children, you might also compare these parents' experience to your own. If you do not have children, what did you learn that helped you to understand prenatal development, childbirth, and infancy better?

Guidelines for Interview Techniques

1. Set up the interview in advance; preferably ask for about one hour. Arrange a time when neither mother nor interviewer feel rushed. It is important that baby be awake for some of the time.

2. Be flexible. If the baby is awake when you arrive, start with observation and then interview mother later. If the baby is asleep, start with the interview. Be willing to reschedule, if necessary.

3. Establish rapport with the mother before you begin the interview. A friendly relationship will make everyone feel more comfortable and will aid the interview process.

4. Do a lot of listening. Record the responses of the mother as objectively as possible.

5. Describe the baby as objectively as possible. Avoid terms like "cute," "all boy," "a real princess," etc. Before the interview, make sure you understand the terms that I have written in bold.

Paper should be formatted in four sections and labeled I, II, III, IV, as above. Each section will be graded independently, so give each section your full effort.
