Question: For this short assignment, you are to create a short photo essay about the ways you occupy space and move in the world.

Based on your first auto-ethnography, choose one place that is of importance to you, and using photos and text, create a narrative about how that place shapes or impacts the ways your experience your identities, and discuss how the identities you hold give you a unique or different experience of this place than other people might have.

Revise and rewrite your auto-ethnography to focus on one specific location, using 3-4 photos of this place that help tell your story. Underneath each photo, include a one line descriptive caption [at minimum include the date you took this photo and its location]. Your photos should help you tell your story! Challenge yourself to be more experimental with your images and words. The photo can be as abstract or realist as you want it to be- the only expectation is that it contributes to your readers' understanding of your story about this place and your experiences within it. Your photos should illustrate your essay, so incorporate them into the Word document between the paragraphs of your text.

Basic autoethnography of mobility instructions:

You should start by identifying yourself by one or more identities you hold (race, class, gender, sexuality, citizenship status, age, ability, etc.) and share a narrative about how these identity/identities impact your ability to move freely or not freely in this place. This narrative can take a variety of forms. You can vividly write about one physical place that you move through frequently or infrequently-such as school, home, work, places of leisure. You can recount the kinds of interactions, conversations, and encounters you have in this place with objects or with other people-strangers, friends, family, or others. You can write about yourself in the first person or in the third person. However you choose to approach this piece, make sure to focus on the relationship that you have with the people that you interact with in the place that you move through. You will want to not only describe what you see, hear, smell, taste, or touch-you will want to spend some time analyzing the significance, interest, or importance of sharing this story with your reader about the ways you move through the world.

The auto-ethnography should be 4 pages of text, double-spaced, in 12point Times New Roman font with 1" margins. You should include 3-4 photographs that you take yourself, with a one line descriptive caption underneath each photo. You do not need to cite readings or outside sources, but if you do so, make sure to properly cite in-text (MLA or Chicago-Style citation format) and include a bibliography.
