Question: Description: The purpose of this paper is to encourage students to gain an in-depth understanding of the intersection of mental health with immigration policies and the criminal justice system in Canada.

Instruction:

Step 1: Research the newspaper articles to find an example of a real-life case in Canada. Make sure your case study explores the intersection of mental health and/or addictions with immigration status and interaction with the criminal justice system. Create a half a page case study. You should also read at least one more source to get a better understanding of your case study and situation.

Step 2: Refer to your textbook, weekly readings and further find three scholarly articles/research paper that is relevant to your case study and explore the condition of immigrants or refugees dealing with mental health and/or addiction issues as they come into contact with the justice system. Establish the connection between your case study and the three readings and incorporate the relevant points of these three articles to your paper.

Step 3: Introduction to your paper (half a page) Your introduction is a road map to your paper in which you must clearly state what you intend to cover in your paper. Make sure you answer the questions: who, what, when, where, how... while introducing your case study.

Step 4: Analysis (2 pages) Write your paper under the following heading:

• Summarize the key points of each reading and connect their relevant to your case study;

• Based on your readings, describe the mental health and/or addiction condition your case is/was dealing with • Explain how such conditions have made your case to encounter the criminal justice system;

Step 5: Policy (2 pages)

• Describe one immigration policy which can increase the vulnerability of your case study towards precarious immigration status (possible arrest, detention or deportation);

• Explain if your case study is eligible for "diversion" program or any other legal support programs

Step 6: The role of Stigma (2 pages)

• Identify how generalized stigma impact persons dealing with mental health and addictions, as well as stigma towards immigrants and refugees, including those who are confronted by the justice system impacts your case study;

Step 7: Conclusion (half a page): In your conclusion, discuss what you lesson you learned writing this paper and how it helps you within your practice with immigrant and refugees.

Paper Format: • Read professional submission of assignments

• Use heading: Title page, Table of content, Introduction, analysis, policy, diversion, role of stigma and conclusion

• Number your pages, staple your assignment

• Include APA reference page

• Students must submit the soft copy of your paper by email and a hard copy of their papers in the class on the due date for grading. Make sure to keep a copy of your paper with you. Use the APA Style Guide to cite sources used, including both in-text citation and a reference list of resources used. Papers without citation or references to the works used or incorrectly cited references (i.e. Bibliography listed, but no in-text citations) will not be graded.
