Question: Answer 3 of the following questions. 1000-1300 words per question. A bibliography is required.

1. Do you agree or disagree that gentrification is a positive development in cities across the nation? Please be detailed with your answer with analytical specificity.

2. What are the positive and negative aspects of public housing in Latino and low-income neighborhoods? Provide history (Chavez Ravine) and critiques of the so-called "Red Scare" and its impact on living in the projects. Possibly discuss alternatives to the housing crisis in contemporary Los Angeles and across the nation. You will be graded on your ability to follow the rubric.

3. The following question is more theoretical and reflective. It is a so-called open-ended question. Open-ended questions require an answer with more depth and tend to be more conceptual. You must demonstrate your ability to think a more critically. Professor has stressed that Mexican American neighborhoods have been shaped, especially during the past four decades, by structural macroeconomic trends. Please provide examples of such changes and the consequences of economic restructuring in Latino and poor communities.

4. If you were elected Mayor of Los Angeles (hellish job ?) and your first responsibility was to lay out a bare bones urban policy agenda, what would it address and include? Give two examples of possible and foundational solutions only. Examples of policy options might include and cover the following topics: Education, inequality, gang violence, homelessness.

5. One of the first films we screened in class was Chavez Ravine when the City of Los Angeles displaced or evicted 300 families in the early 1950's. Is this anything like the current battles over gentrification in Boyle Heights and other parts of the country? Please explain if it is or is not. Detail the processes and circumstances of displacement.
