Question 1

You're a young knight-errant and you've been commissioned to slay a hideous dragon. After an arduous trek up the mountain, you finally reach its lair. You enter and immediately announce, "I am Sir/Dame (enter your own name) and I've come to put a stop to the havoc you've been wreaking on the good peoples of yonder village!" You hear a slight rumbling emanating from the deep recesses of the cave. It slowly
grows louder until, after what seems like an eternity, the foul beast finally emerges, its teeth dripping saliva in anticipation of its next meal.

Using this scenario, describe (being as specific and precise as possible) the generation of fear from the perspective of the three major theories of emotion we discussed in class. In your answer, for each theory, start with the perception of the dragon and continue on through to the subjective experience of fear. Also, before leaving to face the dragon, a powerful sorcerer, known as Magus William James, gave you some advice on how to be brave. What did he likely tell you? Relate your answer for the latter to a study discussed in class (one that provides support for his advice).

This question (as with all questions) is to be answered in a maximum of two pages (though shoot for as close to one page as possible), double-spaced, using 12 point, and Arial font.

Question 2

As we learned in class, stress may compromise our health and well-being. Here I'd like you to apply what we learned to your own lives. First, identify some stressor(s) in your own life and describe the stress response (i.e., the physiological changes that take place when confronted with these stressors). Second, discuss how, if prolonged, these changes may adversely affect your health and well-being. And third, based on information given in class, the video we watched, or the textbook, describe how you might go about dealing with this stressor. Where possible, be sure to relate your answers to pertinent research (e.g., just like in some study where individuals that did something were healthier, I likewise expect better health outcomes by doing the same).

This question (as with all questions) is to be answered in a maximum of two pages (though shoot for as close to one page as possible), double-spaced, using 12 point, and Arial font.

Question 3

Consider the following description of Rosy.

Rosy is a young woman with big goals. After she graduates from high school, she plans on going to university and eventually to medical school to become a doctor.

She is very organized and disciplined, so much so that every minute of every day is accounted for, including when she eats, sleeps, studies, exercises, and socializes. Rosy also tends to worry a lot, however. In fact, after she returns from a night of socializing, she often has difficulty sleeping because she ruminates on something that someone said to her (e.g., whatever did she mean by that comment?).

Given this information about Rosy, answer the following questions. First, what two factors of the BIG Five does this description pertain to? Would you expect her to score high or low on each of these factors? Second, are these personality traits conducive to her achieving her goals? Explain. Third, based on research with the Big Five, how might we expect these personality traits to change as she ages? Fourth, how would Freud account for why she has the personality trait described in the first paragraph?

This question (as with all questions) is to be answered in a maximum of two pages (though shoot for as close to one page as possible), double-spaced, using 12 point, and Arial font.
