Question 1

This question is meant to be a demonstration of your understanding of the concepts and theories associated with emotional intelligence.

The scenario: You have been experiencing a rough day and have decided to take a break in the Student Center with a medium latte.

While waiting in line the two people ahead of you (Bert and Ernie) begin to argue (loudly with passion). In frustration Ernie accuses Bert of being an insensitive idiot To which Bert responds angrily That shows how much you know because in my INMGT 400 class I scored 124 on an on-line IO test and 15 out of 16 on an EO test; and besides, just because I think poor people should quit complaining and just get a job like the rest of us doesn't make me insensitive!" At which point Ernie makes a sound of disgust, steps out of line, and quickly walks away without saying a word while Bert shouts look who is being insensitive now!!"

Explain the flaws in Bert's understanding of emotional intelligence.

Question 2

This question is meant to be a demonstration of your understanding of the competencies associated with leadership, and specifically critical thinking.

The scenario: You are now sitting in the Student Center with a medium latte, when Elmo, the president of the UW-Stout Elvis Presley Fan Club, sits down next to you and reports that there is now proof that Elvis is still alive and that he was seen yesterday by a woman who had driven up to a pet store in Kalamazoo, Michigan (where she lives).

Elmo explains that she (the woman) noticed a blue metallic van with a gorgeous dog sitting behind the wheel, and then went into the store to ask who owned the beautiful dog, and a man wearing big sunglasses with gold rims turned to her and said, "it's mine." She looked at him, and although he had a lot of grey in his hair, immediately recognized the voice and just started staring at him.

He got uncomfortable and started to leave the store when she said al knew you would own a dog like that, it's just beautiful". To which he responded "Well thank you, thank you very much." Then got in his van and quickly drove away. And, before you can say anything, the fan club president (Elmo) tells you it was all captured on the store's security tape and is now on You Tube proving it must be true, and then quickly leaves to spread the news.

Explain, from the perspective of being a competent critical thinker, why Elmo may be an ineffective leader .
