Answer-Puerto Rico has always been a strategically advantageous military position in the Caribbean. It is utilized as a location to defend the U.S., weapons testing, and military surveillance. Since the closing of U.S> bases in Panama, Puerto Rico has become home to US military forces in Latin America. The US military installations in Puerto Rico are part of the US Atlantic Command which has authority over all US military operations that take place throughout the Atlantic. Both the Naval Forces Caribbean and the Fleet Air Caribbean were formerly based at the Roosevelt Roads Naval Station. The Forces Caribbean has authority over all US Naval activity in the waters of the Caribbean while Fleet Air Caribbean has authority over all US military flights and air operations over the Caribbean.
