Amos and Andy initially showed that black people were bumbling idiots and in later television sitcoms like Juliathey tried to show that black people are normal people and can achieve the same as white people and in an idealized world where racial tensions between white and black people do not exist.

Another stereotype in those early shows is that there are no black men in the family though Good times sought to address this by having a black mother and father in a long term marriage. It also showed that people can be poor living in inner city suburbs and still be happy.
