Q- "Being There" ( At least 5 paragraph) Descriptive Essay

Please use the MLA Template linked in the "Being There" Essay folder. It will save you many headaches, such as a negative impact on the grade for the paper.

OVERVIEW: Your purpose with this first essay is to describe a REAL place that you have experienced for yourself, and it should be a place where you would love to be again. Your job is to do your best to bring this place to life for your readers.

Please choose a place where you do NOT spend all your time. It can be a place in your home, but remember that our homes are indeed special to us, but descriptions of even the loveliest homes tend not to interest readers as much as they interest the persons who live there. Consider whether there are specific reasons why your choice of a place to describe holds such importance for you.

1) Your essay should have a "blueprint" thesis statement at the end of paragraph one; revisit the Unit 1 modules if you need a "refresher" on the "blueprint" thesis statement. You should also use the Outline Pattern for Drafting in the Unit 1 Essay folder for planning your thesis. It can also help you organize and plan the rest of your essay as well.

2) Your description of this place should help your readers to experience (to some extent) the place you have chosen through your descriptions.

3) Your topic sentences for each paragraph should relate back to your thesis statement. This will help you stay focused on your main point as you develop your details. descriptions should give your readers a clear idea of WHY this place is a place you want/like to be.

4) This is not a description of a person. It is to be a description of a place. It may have sentimental or romantic significance for you, but that should NOT be your focus. Your purpose is to bring the PLACE to life. If a person is involved at all, your rule of thumb is to be sure you do not shift your main focus away from the place to the person. This will help you stay focused on the main thing: the place you are describing.

Access and read the student sample essay, "A Place to Be" here in the Unit 1 Essay folder. This is an essay that a former student did in this class, and it is a wonderful example of what you can do with this brief assignment. It is shorter than yours will be, but it is still a great sample of how this can be done.

MOST Important: This should be a place that you have actually experienced. Sometimes people will try to imagine a place they would love to go but which they have never visited. Just a heads-up: Even the best efforts like this tend to be very flat and not very successful. Please describe a real place where you have really been.
