Purpose

In each case study, you will complete multiple parts; some case studies have two parts and some have three. Specific instructions are outlined in each case study below.

Case Study Sections

Part 1

Review the website below and respond to the questions. Your response should be a minimum of 200 words, but may not exceed 350 words.
You are working for the police department of your city. When hiring employees, the department uses a physical ability test, in which candidates are asked to do 30 push-ups and 25 sit-ups, as well as climb over a 4-foot wall. When candidates take this test, it seems that about 80% of the men who take the test actually pass it, while only 10% of the female candidates pass the test. Do you believe that this is a fair test? Why or why not? If you are asked to review the employee selection procedures, would you make any changes to this system? Why or why not?

Part 2
Review the website below and respond to the questions. Your response should be a minimum of 200 words, but may not exceed 350 words.

Review the OB in "Action Case Study: SpeakUp -Collaborating Ideas through ICT," found on page 245 of the textbook, Organizational Behaviour. Provide your response to the questions at the end of the case study.

Discussion Questions

1. Review Table 7.4 (you may also want to go back to the Chapter 4 Focus on Diversity feature box) and determine which generation category Ray Gillenwater fits. Identify events and behaviours from the case that are consistent with norms from his generational category.

2. Identify at least two examples of whether Gillenwater supports more or less open communication between various levels of organizational personnel. Is this consistent with his generational behaviour as discussed in #1 above?

3. What are some possible reasons why BlackBerry senior executives would be so cautious about upward communication, especially when it comes to employees collaborating on ideas or sharing their thinking around strategic corporate initiatives?
