PURPOSE

Assessment task is designed for you to demonstrate your knowledge about:

- Electrical equipment used and the benefits of the electrical equipment
- Scope of practice and when to refer clients to other practitioners
- Identifying contra-indications
- Designing future treatment plans and recommending home care advice
- How nutrition impacts on the skin and the relationship between nutrition and healthy skin
- Anatomy and physiology of the skin and body structures to explain what has possibly occurred or contributed to your client's skin condition

ASSESSMENT TASK

Case Study Part A:

Case Study 1 - Seborrhoea/ Acne

John is a 17 year old male, studying in his final year at high school. He works part time in a popular takeaway restaurant on weekends and evenings. John is saving for his first car and has recently taken on extra shifts and is now working most evenings. The extra shifts and studying for final exams has added extra stress on John, and he gets limited sleep at night because he needs to study after he finishes work.

John plays football at school and changes back into his school uniform from his sports clothes that are kept in his gym bag between wears and washes.

The majority of John's meals are from his takeaway restaurant at night (mostly burgers) and school bought lunches (comprising of soft drinks, packets of chips and meat pies). He also has a limited water intake.

John only uses soap on his face and sunblock when outside playing sports. It has been within the last
8 months that his skin has worsened to red, inflamed pustules, papules and open and closed comedones. These are now present on the majority of John's face. Prior to this, John's skin only presented with open and closed comedones and the occasional pustule. John has advised that he has previously visited a doctor who discussed Roaccutane with him.

John's main concern with his skin is the red and inflamed pustules. John is a new client to the salon and this is your first treatment.

Based on the above information answer the below questions:

Case Study 2 - Prematurely Aged

Sally is 33 years old, and has recently moved to Darwin for work. Sally works in a high stress corporate job that requires long hours. Sally is often out entertaining and dining with her clients. She is a smoker and drinks alcohol daily, with a limited water intake and the majority of her meals being take away or eaten in restaurants.

Due to Sally's long work hours, and late nights with clients, she does not have the time to exercise. Sally is currently only using a foaming cleanser and wears a full face of makeup daily. She has no pre-existing medical conditions.

Sally's skin is thickened, dull and lacklustre. Fine lines are present on the forehead, with deep creases around the eyes and near the mouth. She has loose skin around her neck. Her skin tone is extremely uneven due to a large amount of pigmentation. Sally has admitted that she does not wear a sunscreen and in her youth, spent an extended period of time tanning in the sun and on sun beds.

Sally's main concern is the lines and loose skin on the neck area. Sally is a new client to the salon and this is your first treatment.

Case Study 3 - Diffused Redness/ Rosacea

Jessica is 40 years old; she has fine, pale skin. She has identified that her father has similar skin. Jessica is a part time office worker and is a mother of three children aged eight (8), five (5) and one (1).

Jessica finds that she burns easily and tries to avoid the sun; she is often outside on the weekends watching her children play sports. Her homecare routine is a cream cleanser, moisturiser and an SPF when out in the sun only. Jessica always prepares healthy meals for her children; however, she does drink red wine each night and enjoys spicy food as a takeaway choice weekly.

Since the birth of her last child, Jessica's skin has intensified with the flushing and redness. Her skin now presents as blotchy and red most days and is particularly noticeable on the cheek, nose and chin area. Jessica has also changed her cleanser, as her skin is feeling irritated and sensitive. She has asthma.

Jessica's main concern is the redness on the cheek area. Jessica is a new client to the salon and this is your first treatment.
