Purpose of assignment: This week's chapter provides important information on measuring outcomes - this has become a critical component of a healthcare leader's responsibilities.

Another important role for leaders is to be able to synthesize and summarize information and present it to others who don't have the benefit of the leader's knowledge on the topic - in this case: outcomes measurement. You will get a chance to take what you learned in the chapter and "apply" it in a "real world" scenario:

Directions: You have called a meeting with the Board of Directors for your HCO. The Board members range from internal stakeholders to external stakeholders.

There is a wide range of knowledge about outcomes measurement among the members. In a 3 - 4 page paper, explain each of the topics below and tell the Board members why healthcare leaders need to "capture and measure information (metrics)" in each of the following categories:

Efficiency

Effectiveness

Performance

Efficacy

Quality

Guidelines -What to think about as you write your paper so you include needed information:

You need to clearly indicate which term you are talking about - the BEST way to do this is to BOLD the term as you begin to talk about it.

Your paper must be written as though you are actually speaking to the Board members and clearly show that you discuss each topic above. Picture yourself in the Board Room facing all these people! For example, you can begin by saying "Good morning everyone, today we are going to discuss the components of outcomes measurement . . . . . "

You need to do more than just define the terms - for example: What does the term mean? How is it measured? Why is it important to the HCO's present and future? Your Board members are going to want to know this!

How do you convince them that this is an important role for you and the other leaders in your organization? (Although you would probably do a PowerPoint presentation at the Board meeting, you would first have to "get your thoughts down on paper" so that is why I am having you do a paper.)
