When collecting data you must obtain credible resources and evidence based practice, related to certain populations related to age or disease for example. Utilizing reliable data sources for this information is pertinent. When I think of data management I think of electronic health records and the technological advances occurring with data today in healthcare.

My experience with data management is minimal when it comes to electronic systems. Today in healthcare, Master Data Management is critical business data shared among multiple systems, divided into two types:

Identity date and reference data and is a consistent point of reference (Eliason, Burke, & Hess, 2017). At our facility the hospital has an electronic health record (EHR) that does not have the dialysis charting software included. Therefore, we currently use paper charts that are scanned into the system, at a later date. Over the past year,

I have learned about data management systems as I have been researching different software to implement an EHR into the dialysis unit that will interface with our current hospital system. The unit itself has its own laboratory outside of the hospitals and also equipment interfaces that all need to talk to each other. As I began researching interfaces communicating together, it was brought to my attention that the information goes one direction with each interface and it is a separate interface that returns the information.

At this time we collect all of our data in a paper chart and it is available during operational hours of the unit. This is not beneficial when a patient arrives to the ER or is admitted to the patient care unit as the provider may not have the most current med list or information available to them in the system, as it has not yet been scanned in. It is important that health information exchanges can be used across the organization and also other locations. To understand and manage patient populations we must also combine health system data and payer data, ensuring they match.

I do understand the benefits to consolidating the systems and the use of the electronic health records but understanding the technology behind it is somewhat of a downfall of mine, but I am learning more and more each day. The use of master data management in healthcare provides analytics that help drive higher-quality, lower cost care (Eliason, Burke, & Hess, 2017).

Activities that I can engage in to increase competency and efficiency in my current practice include becoming familiar with the software and where gather the information needed in a timely manner to eliminate time wasted "hunting" for and gathering information and more time for interpreting and improving the data.

According to Felmlee (2017), "Creating a process that is efficient, effective, and reliable will enable analysts to spend more time focused on gleaning insight from the data" (p. 4). An additional benefit would be getting data in real time which is must faster than before which will promote better outcomes for patients and improve care while reducing costs and decreasing wait times.

Another way I can improve my knowledge in data management is to develop a relationship with our health information technology (HIT) department and informatics nurses to assist me in navigating the system efficiently or trouble shooting issue as they arise.

Data analytics design the measurement process, collecting and analyzing data, and presenting the data back to stake holders in a timely and effective manner (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy, & O'Grady, 2014). The third way I can increase my competency in data management would be to utilize standardized reports that are within the system to benefit care and implement goals to improve patient outcomes to assist in reducing error therefore reducing costs.
