Two healthcare trends that are impacting education and research are biomedical engineering and regenerative medicine. Biomedical engineering research has provided advance medical technology through 3D medical applications and prosthetics. Computer aid designs and manufacturing has made it possible to create custom implants, lower and upper body prosthetic technology, orthopedic joints and craniofacial skulls images in support of patient care. For example, prosthetic limbs continue to grow in appearance and technology by Biomedical Engineers ability to make them lightweight, stable, mobile, and flexible for movement which is easier for amputee patients (Pennic, 2017).

Regenerative medicine is mainly known for bone marrow and organ transplants, but in the past few years it has advanced in immunology and cell biology discovering the capabilities of stem cells. This an area of medicine designed mainly to heal damaged organs and tissues. It has the capability to offer medical solutions to patient with server conditions that are thought of as non-repairable (Mahla, 2016). Stem cell research is developing new ways to manage and treat conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and joint/nerve pain. In the future, I think stem cell research will continue to grow and develop with advancements in laboratory grown organs (i.e. Kidneys) and cures to Alzheimer’s diseases (i.e. mental deterioration).

Health care research and education is not and should not only be for clinical providers. Many Hospital Research and Education Departments offer services that can apply to either the entire hospital staff (including nursing, ancillaries, administration, etc.), individual professions, and/or patients specific. For example, at a minimum most hospital staff are required to be certified on Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, so that would be a common course offered to all employees and volunteers. Most medical research projects require a team that may include, but are not limit to providers, nurses, medical specialties, ancillary services, patients or test subject, etc. Feedback from patients and various healthcare professionals are beneficial for any research as it helps analyze, identify symptoms, and provide insight in support of the medical research and/or case study.
