Operating support grants and project support grants are two types of grants that are awarded by foundations and corporate giving programs. Of the two, project support grants are more likely to be funded by a foundation. Project support grants are funds that are awarded to support a particular research effort that has a specific end date. (Liberty University, 2016) With this type of grant, it is used to drill down to more of a granular level of being able to resolve a qualitative issue or problem. Since there is always a beginning and end date with this type of grant, it allows for a full evaluation and analysis of the project. As a result, this particular type of grant can be modified to fit other areas that need a similar analysis administered with results that can be quantified.

A specific example of how this type of grant can be used for a nonprofit is by re-training staff. In the instance of a volunteer fire department or volunteer rescue squad that are both non-profit organizations, they can use this type of grant to pay for the numerous amount of continuous education training hours that each member is required to have each month or each year. The grant would allow the organization to show how the money was allocated from the salary to pay the instructors, to the course materials or medical equipment necessary to purchase or rent for demonstrations, to the money needed to pay re-certification fees to the local or state agency with which the non-profit is affiliated with. With this type of grant it plays a key role in what we have learned in our reading, in which funders are looking for an organization that has a clear, precise direction, as well as a definitive plan of how to reach the desired goal or end result. (Geever, 2012)

There are two categories of grants, general purpose and operating support grants or program development and project support grants. The difference between project/program grants support the funding of project-based outcomes, and specific projects while operating grants support the organization's expenses and activities (Program Grants vs. Operating Support, n.d.). "Project Support grants are awarded to individuals, groups and nonprofit organizations for specific arts projects and programs which are determined to be of value to the community." Project Support grants provide funding for festivals, readings, exhibits, performances, workshops, and concerts, just to provide some examples. When it comes to the side of nonprofit organizations projects could include facility design, fundraising, planning, and marketing (Project Support Grants, 2014).

Delaware Division of the Arts is a nonprofit organization located in Wilmington, Delaware. This nonprofit organization uses funding provided from the use of Project Support grants. "Project Support grants assist in the growth of a vibrant cultural environment by supporting increased access to high-quality arts activities presented by community-based organizations throughout the state." The nonprofit organization's project support grants have an award range from $2,000 and $10,000. Usually Delaware Division of the Arts awards $5,000 or less. The organization has listed the expenses in which they provide funding for such as; personnel, supplies and materials, technical costs, artists' fees, administrative costs, technical costs, and contractual services, just to name a few. They also have an extensive list of what they do not provide funding for such as contingency funds, bad debt, and private entertainment (Delaware Division of the Arts, 2017).
