Pros and Cons of Co-Education:

Thesis Statement: Co-education can be an effective way for students to learn how to learn, act, and prepare for the real world with the opposite sex.

Introduction: One of the hardest decisions a parent can make is what type of school they will enroll their child. Both co-educational and same sex schools have their advantages and disadvantage that will ultimately affect the way a child learns and grows.

Body:

1. Students who attend same sex schools often perform better and learn more because they are less focused on the opposite sex.

a. In same sex schools, students let their guard down and find that the atmosphere is more relaxing and enjoyable.
b. The disadvantage of same sex school is that the students do not know how to focus or learn in situations that may involve the opposite sex.

2. Co-educational schools offer students diversity that will better prepare them for the real world.

a. In co-educational schools, students will be forced to interact with the opposite sex and deal with situations that will be a learning experience for them.

b. Students in same sex schools will not be able to interact with the opposite sex in learning and working situations.

  • The students of same sex schools may have a difficult time when they transition to a co-educational school or the workplace.

3. Many believe that students learn better in same sex schools, but it is the teachers and the schools more than it is the students.

a. Girls and boys are more likely to study better in same sex schools, but this could be due to a stricter and more rigorous classrooms.

b. In co-educational classrooms, students are capable of learning just as much as they are in same sex schools.

  • Over time, students will be more comfortable with their classmates in co-ed schools.

4. Effective teachers will help any student whether they are in a co-educational or same sex classroom.

Conclusion: Co-education and same sex schools both have their advantages and disadvantages. While same sex schools may work for students in the classroom, it will leave them unprepared for the future.
