Write a 2-3 page proposal for strategies/initiatives to improve the status of Afro-Latin American or Afro-Latino communities in one of the areas listed below. The strategies/initiatives that you propose may be spearheaded by the government, Afro-Latin Americans/Afro-Latinos, or other members of a particular society.

Your proposal should focus on one country and incorporate discussion of two required readings for the course. It should be typed in double-spaced 12-point Times New Roman font.

Your proposal should include: (1) a description of the challenges or problems associated with your topic or issue; and (2) a rationale explaining why the strategies you are advocating would be effective (particularly in comparison to past or current efforts). 

The proposal should focus on one of the following topic areas:

1. Afro-Brazilian women
2. Social Inequality and Social Policy (you should focus on Brazil or Colombia)
3. Black-Latino Relations in the U.S. (you may also discuss Afro-Latinos) 

Your proposal must be developed independently. This means that you should not discuss your work with students in the class or anyone else. You should also type the UNC Honor Pledge on the last page, followed by your name: "I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid in the completion of this assignment." Exams that do not contain the Honor Pledge will not receive a grade.

* Note: If you write on Afro-Brazilian women, you may discuss the reading by Angela Gilliam, which is on blackboard. It was added as an optional reading for Nov. 17 and is relevant to issues covered in the film "Cinderelas, Wolves and an Enchanted Prince," which was shown that day. The video is on reserve in the Media Resources Center under AFAM 254.
