Imagine yourself presenting this speech on political, economic, or public policy issues to a diverse group of stakeholders who have an interest in the global community. Keep in mind that many different interests will be represented. You will create an oral presentation that effectively communicates the following:

• Identify an issue as global: An issue must have a social, political, economic, and/or cultural effect on the global populace at large and engage global citizenry.

• Identify how the topic relates to global society.

• What are the effects on national identity? Why is global interconnectedness important?

• Why is it important to establish a global community around this topic?

• Why is the issue of current importance? Are there problems or a call for policy changes?

• What is the role of the individual?

• How can the issue be addressed to the satisfaction of as many stakeholders as possible?

• What role does technology serve to facilitate the issue?

Topic Choices

• Clean drinking water

• Access to medicine and public health

• Natural resources and policy

• Immigration policies

• Human trafficking

• Global warming: controversies and policies

• Fast food industry

• Childbirth, childcare, and/or maternal/paternal leave policies

• Corporate unionization around the world (compare/contrast)

• Labor policies (wages, benefits, etc.)

• Marijuana legalization/decriminalization

• Mass media and body image

• Privatization of prisons

• Sports and patriotism

• Urban sprawl

• Children in poverty

• Homelessness

• Criminal justice system

• Citizen political participation

• Other global topics as approved by the instructor

The following critical elements must be addressed specifically:

1. Background

a. Which global issue did you choose? Why?

b. What is the global significance?

c. What do you want to know, and why do you want to know it?

d. Present your issue from three (3) different disciplinary perspectives

2. Individual, National, and Global Role

a. What is the individual's role?

b. What is the nation's role? What are the effects on national identity?

c. What is the global role? Why is global interconnectedness important? How is it related to national identity?

3. Political and Policy Implications

a. What would be the political and policy concerns regarding the issue you chose?

b. Are there specific problems or concerns that should be addressed with this issue? If so, what do stakeholders need to know in order to address them?

c. How can the issue be addressed to the satisfaction of as many stakeholders as possible?

4. Benefits and Challenges of a Global Community

a. What are the benefits and challenges to a global community in relation to your issue?

i. Consider access (or lack of access) to resources, sharing ideas, cultural practices, and the effects on local environments.

5. Communication: Effectively communicate ideas that would engage diverse individuals and communities into action

a. How could the use of global news media be helpful in communicating these ideas? How would you go about getting the information to media outlets?

b. How could social networking be important in communicating ideas that would engage diverse individuals and communities?

c. Based on the stakeholders that you expect to be the most involved in the issue you chose, what do you believe is the best method for communicating information to them?

6. Evaluation: How does technology increase global awareness? How does this foster discourse?

a. How can technology address this issue?

b. What are the positive aspects? Negative aspects?

c. Do you believe the positive aspects of technology that you identify outweigh the negatives? Why or why not?
