PROJECT- Analogous Color schemes

Goals:

This project continues our exploration of the interrelationship of color. Your objective is to create two designs similar in basis to the works of Piet Mondrian. The finished project should contain shapes, solid colors, and an innate sense of flatness within the pictorial plane.

Required Media:
15" x 20" Illustration Board
#2 Pencil
Straight Edge
Paint Brush (#12 flat tip watercolor/gouache)
Cup of Water
10-well Plastic Tray
Gouache: Primary Red, Primary Yellow, Primary Blue
Newspaper/Cloth/Paper Towels
Palette Knife (optional)
Viewfinder (optional)

Assignment:

1) Begin with the illustration board in a horizontal position.

2) Draw a vertical line dividing the illustration board in half. Each side will be an independent design.

3) Using the viewfinder concentrate on finding interesting abstract/non-objective (rectilinear) lines and angles. A viewfinder is a piece of material, such as cardboard, with a window in the center, roughly 3" by 4", that you would look through to help focus on forms rather than entire objects. I suggest you consider buildings-both exterior and interior-and other man-made objects.

4) Create a design by drawing the outlines (no interior lines) from the objects found using the viewfinder directly onto the illustration board using pencil. Consider the importance of cropping and layering shapes to build a good composition. Focus on forms and relationships rather than recognizable objects (Non-representational over representational). Make sure to create a different design for each side of the illustration board. The sides do not have to correlate or match.

5) Paint in the shapes of each design using gouache paint. Paint to the edges of the illustration board as there is no border on this project. The left design should be completed using warm colors and the right design should be completed using cool colors.

6) On the BACK of the illustration board, in the upper left hand corner, please write your name, the project number, and your class information (example: MWF 9am). Please use a marker!

DO THIS BEFORE YOU BEGIN YOUR PROJECT OR AFTER THE PAINT HAS DRIED!!!

7) Do not turn in projects that are still wet. They should be allowed to dry overnight.

8) Examples of finished artworks are below. They are for reference only! Do not copy them!
