Project - Resolving a Landfill Problem

You are the assistant engineer for the Town of Quillicom in Northern Ontario. Your boss is Robert D Delorme, P.Eng, who is the town engineer.

Mr Delorme has assigned a landfill project to You: the existing landfill site at Lot 22, Subdivision 3S-is nearly full and a new site must be found quickly. He hands you a report by H L Winman and Associates and instructs you to read it. (Turn to Figure 5-5, on pages 88 to 93 to read the report.)

Mr Delorme tells you that before the town councillors can make a decision on which site to develop, they will need to know how much it will cost to drill a dozen boreholes north of Quillicom and analyse the results. He asks you to get some price quotations for the work. He also says, privately, that you need to be aware that the councillors have indicated their preference for Lot 18, Subdivision 5N, rather than any other location. Here are some other details:

- Morley Wozniak, at H L Winman and Associates in Thunder Bay, will plot the results of the borehole drilling.

- The positions for the boreholes are to be shown on a map (see Figure 5-5, page 90)

- A list titled "Borehole Specifications for the Area North of Quillicom" contains the exact positions where the drilling must be carried out.

- You are to get at least two (and preferably three) price quotations for the drilling.
