Problem

One positive attitude is reliability and ethics. According to Robbins & Judge, "It is common for employees to receive ethics and values guidance incorporated in new-employee orientations, ongoing developmental programs, or as periodic reinforcements of ethical principles. But the jury is still out on whether you can teach ethics. Supporters of ethics training says values can be learned and changed. (pp. 573). I think that ethics is an important attitude attribute to have because when in a work place, I think that it is important for employees to be ethical, as well as the employer. I think that having values within a company will hold the company to higher standard. Ways to teach employees to have an attitude of ethic and value would be to host ethical seminars and programs.

One negative attitude is entitlement. I think entitlement first starts off as someone having the attitude of "what's in it for me", but once they do not exceed or earn the first bonus, they are quick to have the attitude of lack of work ethic. I think entitlement is just a negative attitude to have and can negatively affect the demeanor of the whole workplace. Shannon expresses that, "The origin of the employee entitlement phenomenon can be traced back to a faulty ‘psychological contract' between the organization and the employee. It is an implicit understanding on the part of an employee about what he or she contributes to the organization and what can be expected from it in return. This contract is usually formed by a combination of an employee's personal history - experiences at other companies, for example - and by what a manager states or subtly hints concerning what the employee will receive for his efforts. When the employee expects to receive what the manager is promising (either directly or indirectly), the result is a feeling of entitlement to everything that the employee actually gets." (pp.3)
