First, emotions are the feelings that you specifically have towards a person or an experience. Whereas, moods aren't necessarily directed at a person or an experience. However, your "emotions can turn into moods when you lose focus on the event or object that started the feeling. And, by the same token, good or bad moods can make you more emotional in response to an event." (Robbins, Judge, 2017, p. 98) There are several sources of our emotions and moods. The weather can play a part in how you feel, which could bleed into how you fell about someone or something. Your personality is another one some people have an overly happy personality so when they are happy they are really happy and on the other spectrum. When they are sad, they are really sad. Day of the week too, who isn't happier on Friday then they are on Monday, lol? Also, the time of day. Some people are morning people, so they are happier in the mornings. Your social activity, stress, sleep, gender, and age also affects your moods and emotions. Emotional intelligence, or EI, "is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others." (Psychology, 2017, p. 1) Your EI is also the way you interpret the meaning of these emotions too. Understanding your workers emotions, moods and EI is crucial. Their feelings and emotions do have a direct impact on effectiveness, productivity and ultimately the bottom line of the organization. Therefore, if you are able to keep your feelings and moods happy of the folks on your team your group effectiveness will skyrocket.
