Problem 2

The position of Governor in Texas is a weak one, but it is weak by design. The Texas Constitution, which designed the position of Governor in Texas, was written in a post-Civil War era that saw politicians and corruption running wild and hand in hand.

The original plan was for the Governor to have limited powers, and have to share them with other elected officials, the Railroad Commissioner and the State Board of Education, so no one got too powerful.

I personally do not mind this setup, especially when we had that moron, Rick Perry, in office. I think it is ideal to have a separation of powers to protect the interests of the citizens of this state instead of the interests of those in charge in Austin.

The only negatives to this type of setup would be a lack of authority, but that isn't always a bad thing. The text states that many Governors have successfully pushed their programs through with support from the legislature, as long as they were willing to cooperate.

I honestly do not know whether or not Texas would benefit from a reduced number of offices within the plural executive branch, it has worked as it was intended and I am pretty happy with the way things are running now. I would be interested in change or reform, if there was a promise of educational reform. It is heartbreaking to see the conditions of our public schools because of a lack of funding and the pitiful wages we pay our teachers.

Heck, now that I think about it, maybe the offices that need the most reform are the State Board of Education. Instead of constantly developing more standardized tests, that don't measure anything important, we can return to the way things were 20 years ago, and give our students a fighting chance. (307)
