Problem 1 : Design for Vertical Loads

The figure below is a floor plan of a six story residential building located in downtown Philadelphia. It is a reinforced concrete frame building with 6 in concrete floor slab. Superimposed dead load is 15 psf. Floor height is 12 ft.

1- Perform gravity load analysis to determine the uniformly distributed dead and live load on the intermediate beam ABC in a typical floor.

2- Using approximate method of analysis, determine beam maximum moment and shear for 1.2 D + 1.6 L load combination. Ignore beam self-weight.

3- Using approximate method of analysis, determine the maximum axial load at the base of the intermediate column B. Assume roof load is equal to floor load and use 1.2 D + 1.6 L load combination. Ignore self-weight of beams and columns.

Problem 2 : Design for Lateral Loads

For the shown 5 story residential building determine the maximum axial load, shear and moment at the base column of the external frame (in the N-S direction) due to 0.9 D + 1.0 E. Also calculate the factor of safety against overturning

Data:

1- Floors and roof is 8" thick concrete slab

2- Superimposed dead load = 20 psf

3- Seismic force in the N-S direction= 60 kips

4- Stiffness of intermediate frames is double that of exterior/edge frames
