Presidential Rhetoric Project - Appeals in Presidential Rhetoric

Objective: Demonstrate your ability to identify the three audience appeals (logos, ethos, and pathos) in a work and discuss how they affect the audience's reception of what the speaker is saying.

Directions: For this assignment you will select ONE of the options provided (the options can be found below the link to these instructions in this week's module) as your text and, using highlighting and footnotes, annotate the speech identifying specific instances where the three appeals are used. In the same annotations you will also discuss how they affect the audience. Your annotated speech will be framed with an introductory paragraph that introduces the speech and states your thesis which will make a clear statement as to whether you found the speaker's use of appeals effective or not. You will then paste the entire speech in directly after your intro. An example from a former student has been provided for your reference. Please note that the example is from a different speech. You will analyze the entire speech that you select. You are not writing an essay for this assignment.  The only writing you should do is in the introduction and in your footnotes.

  • Be specific, identify them by name.
  • In the same annotations you will also discuss how they affect the audience.
  • Your annotated speech will be framed with an introductory paragraph that introduces the speech and states your thesis which will make a clear statement as to whether you found the speaker's use of appeals effective or not. An example can be found below this document in this week's section.
  • Required # of footnotes/annotations: There are easily at least 20 places in each speech where different appeals are used. You should try to find as many as you can to demonstrate to me that you can identify these and understand how they impact the argument. A minimum of 10 footnotes should be inserted. Go deep with your annotations. Be thorough. Prove to me that you understand these key concepts.

Annotations will:

  • Identify specifically where all three appeals are used throughout the speech and discuss the effect each has. Be clear as to which appeal you are referring to. Each appeal can be found in multiple places throughout the speech. Discuss as many as you can find. Your goal here is to convince me, your dear 'ol instructor, that you grasp the concepts. Use the highlighting tool in your word processor to highlight the sentences you are referring to in each annotation.
  • Use present tense when referring to the author's act of writing or speaking. Examples: Obama speaks with authority....He states....He claims... He urges...
  • Use correct terminology. When discussing the appeals say Romney builds credibility or establishes ethos, Obama appeals to logic, the speaker appeals to emotion, etc. A writer does not "use" pathos, logos, or ethos on his audience; he appeals or establishes those elements.
  • Be written in complete sentences that are free of grammatical errors.
  • Be written using academic scholarly language

A works cited page is not required for this assignment.
