Rapid Appraisal

Perform a rapid appraisal of each article by answering the following questions (one to two sentences are sufficient to answer each question):

1) How does each article describe the nature of the problem, issue, or deficit you have identified?

2) Does each article provide statistical information to demonstrate the gravity of the issue, problem, or deficit?

3) Example(s): morbidity, mortality, rate of incidence or rate of occurrence in the general population.

4) Does each article support your proposed change?

PICOT Statement and Question

Identifying a nursing issue or problem in any hospital setting is the start of implementing change. A PICOT question is developed by using nursing research in addition to evidence based practice to resolve the target issue or problem. The format to preparing the PICOT question is as follows:

P (Population of Focus): Mechanically ventilated patients

I (Intervention): Intermittent sedation/Sedation breaks

C (Comparison): Intermittent sedation compared to continuous sedation

O (Outcome): Decrease the number of use in mechanical ventilation days and a decrease in hospital expense

T (Time): Decrease the number of days by 15% and a drop in hospital expense and mechanical ventilator days from the time of admission
