Portfolio

This challenge requires you to put together a portfolio, demonstrating your aptitude as an exercise professional. You will be guided as the tasks that need to be completed each week, and provided with templates for use. You are encouraged to use these templates as a guide and to create your own version of these tools, so that you are well equipped for when you start you own business.

Your coaches will provide you with frequent feedback throughout your journey. You must demonstrate a satisfactory level of performance at all tasks to be deemed satisfactory for this challenge. Please use neat, legible handwriting when completing document. You may choose to redact personal information relating to your client that has no bearing on the assessable outcomes
- please discuss with your coach.

Environment/location

This challenge is to be performed outside of scheduled class time, however some tutorial time may allow you to work on these tasks (refer to your Course Outline for more information). You may perform the skills required in this challenge, at home, in a commercial fitness facility (with prior permission from the business), or at your Institute campus - speak to your coach for availability.

Equipment/resources
To complete the requirements of this challenge, you will require access to screening equipment including (but not limited to) sphygmomanometer, tape measure, scales and timing devices; fitness equipment that may be commonly found in a facility or home gym, access to the Australian Dietary Guidelines, and access to screening and health consultation documents. This document contains examples of the templates that you will require.

Tasks
- Block 1: find 2 clients who match the specifications above, and perform an initial consultation and health screening on them. Prepare a referral letter for Client 1 to a medical or allied health professional
- Block 2: Design and implement two (2) exercise programs for Client 1

- Block 3: Conduct a fitness appraisal on Client 1, and design and implement two (2) exercise programs for them
- Block 4: Conduct a healthy eating chat with both Client 1 and Client 2, and design and implement one (1) exercise program Client 1


Block 1

Client 1: this client must be a female over the age of 55, or a male over the age of 45, who is willing to participate in a pre-exercise health screening, 1 basic exercise programs, a fitness appraisal and a dietary habits consult. Ideally this client will continue to participate as your client during your Personal Trainer studies.

Client 2: this client may be any age and any gender, who is willing to participate in a pre-exercise health screening and a healthy eating chat. A tribe-mate would be ideal for this role or a friend

Task 1 - Initial consultation and health screening

1. Using the Australian Pre-exercise Screening System Stage 1 and the Personal Fitness Profile, conduct consultations with both clients. Present the completed screening documents for both in your portfolio

Task 2 - Allied health referral

1. Using information gained during your initial consultation and health screening with Client 1, prepare a referral letter to a suitable medical or allied health professional. If your client presented with no risk factors, injuries or concerns, prepare a referral letter based on the following case study:
? Deborah Smith is a 56-year-old female, who works in a racing stable
? She has had many falls from horses over the years, and suffers from chronic low back pain
? She finds that this pain is worse in the mornings, and on her days off when she doesn't move as much
? She wants to begin an exercise program to help improve her strength and well being

Present a copy of the completed referral letter (either for Client 1 or Deborah Smith) in your portfolio.

Block 2

In this block you will begin to deliver some basic exercises to Client 1. You are required to train with your client twice during this time. To assist you, we have provided the first exercise program for you to follow. Refer to Session 02, 10 and 12 to help you facilitate this.

You will need to download and print 2 copies of the EP Program Card - copy the exercise program that we have given you onto one of these, and design your own on the second. Be sure to note on the program card any comments that you have about your client's performance during these sessions, and submit them in your portfolio.

Block 3

This week, you are required to take Client 1 through a full fitness appraisal and two (2) exercise programs.

Task 1 - Fitness appraisal

1. You will take Client 1 through a full range of fitness appraisals, including cardiovascular testing (BP, HR and a fitness test), muscular strength/endurance and flexibility/ROM assessment, and a body composition assessment. Record your findings on the Fitness Test Record and Body Composition Record forms. Present all of these in your portfolio.

Task 2 - Exercise programs

1. Plan and deliver a further two (2) exercise programs for Client 1. Make sure that your exercise programs are suitable to the client's needs and goals, and that you are recording them accurately on the Basic Program Card. Present these in your portfolio. If you need any help with these, please speak to your Course Coach.

Block 4

In this block, you will be required to take both Client 1 and Client 2 complete a Dietary Habits Questionnaire on their dietary habits. You will also need to train Client 1 a final time for this module.

Task 1 - Food chat and Dietary Habits Questionnaire

1. Conduct a dietary habits consult with Client 1. Record the results of this conversation on the Dietary Habits Questionnaire form. Present this in your portfolio.
2. Conduct a dietary habits consult with Client 2. Record the results of this conversation on the Dietary Habits Questionnaire form. Present this in your portfolio

Task 2 - Exercise program delivery

1. Plan and deliver a final one (1) exercise program for Client 1. Make sure that your exercise program is suitable to the client's needs and goals, and that you record it accurately on the Basic Program Card. Present this in your portfolio.
