The Millennium Development Goals

In 2000, a world conference set a series of eight goals for the nations of the world to attain by 2015. These are the Millennium Development Goals:

Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education

Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women

Goal 4: Reduce child mortality

Goal 5: Improve maternal health

Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases (Vanessa,

Goal 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development (Mary Lou)this is mine

Although progress has been made, the world is a long way from meeting these goals (Brown, 2006). It I unlikely that any, let along all, of these goals will be met by the target date or in the near future.

Global poverty has improved in parts of Asia (India and China for example), but parts of Africa (such as Dafur) continue to experience serious challenges.

The available statistics demonstrate that poverty is a serious problem in the United States and a more serious problem worldwide. It is a challenge that stands in the way of hopes for a better future, but on that can be successfully addressed. (McNutt & Hoefer, p. 167-168)

1. Read the section related to your assigned goal (see above). Provide a 2 page (double-spaced) -summary that includes the following: Pages 7-13

a. Identify the goal.

b. What are the key facts?

c. What are the sub-goals?

d. What countries/area are in the lead and behind in achieving goal/sub-goals?

e. What countries/area have had made the greatest improvements?

f. What are some of the barriers for achieving this goal for countries that are in the lead, greatest improved, and falling behind?

g. Where does the US stand and what are barriers specifically challenging the US from making greater improvement?

2. The Sustainable Development Goals (current UN goals) are now represented by 17 goals. Answer the following questions in two to three paragraphs.

a. Identify what specific Sustainable Development Goals flow from the particular Millennium Goal that you were assigned to study.

b. What are some of the differences between the Millennium Goals and Sustainable Development Goals? (Hint: The website provides some concrete answers to this in the Frequently Asked Questions)

3. Based upon your review of the Millennium Goals and Sustainable Development Goals, where do you think the US will have the greatest struggles in achievement and likely to have the most success and why in moving forward with the Sustainable Development Goals (2 paragraphs)?
