Can we have two different attitudes at once? Has your intuition ever told you something different than your more thoughtful reasoning? Recent research has suggested that in addition to our 'explicit attitudes' (attitudes we can think about and express consciously) we also have 'implicit attitudes' (attitudes that are based on nonverbal associations in memory, and may be unavailable to conscious evaluation and change). There are two links in this posting. The first link is to a website that allows you to take a number of 'Implicit Association Tests' (or IAT's). After you have tried some of these out on your own, watch the video that provides more information about the research behind this measure. 

How did your implicit attitudes match up with your explicit attitudes? Why might these two types of attitudes be mismatched occasionally? Some people deny the information provided by the IAT, claiming that it does not accurately describe their attitudes. Did you feel that way about any of the tests you took?
