Donna Scruggs Discussion

Locke's Goal Setting Theory

Locke's Goal Setting Theory is about setting clear goals, reinforcing the need to set specific and difficult goals. Motivate goals consist of clarity, challenge, commitment, feedback and task complexity.

Locke's goal setting theory enable individuals to use goal settings in the workplace. For example, including people in their own goal setting, making an appropriate effort to also encourage employees, by keeping them informed of what's going on. Goals will be consistent with overall vision and purpose that the company seeks (McLeod, 2018).

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a motivational theory in psychology that involves a five tier pyramid model of human needs. The grid explains how people are motivated from different levels. For example, the most basic need is survival (psychological need) which include water, food, warmth and rest.

This level motivates human behavior until it reaches the safety needs next level. Human beings like to feel safe and secure at some time or another. Belongingness and love needs consist of intimate relationships and friends. The fourth level is Esteem level, the prestige and feeling of accomplishment is achieved.

The last of the pyramid is called Self-actualization. The full potential including creative activities has been met. The five stages can be divided into deficiency needs and growth needs. The lower level of needs should be met before reaching the full potential, self-actualization (McLeod, 2018).

Expectancy Theory

The Expectancy Theory motivates individuals to put forth an effort determined by a rational calculation in which people evaluate themselves. This theory also highlights that motivation is partly a decision-making process. Through the motivation process it is broken down into a number of parts. For example, if a person put in an effort to do a task, can they be expected to perform well? Or will the effort in performing a task help achieve a certain goal.

Expectancy Theory Argument

The operation of each organization is different. Some employees do not feel that their performances are enough even if they have the skills knowledge and abilities. Managing the behavior of employees can become difficult, but if Leaders take time to understand work behaviors of peers, subordinates and supervisors, the organization will achieve better results. Some people like debates and conflicts. Motivation such as expectancy lead performance.

As employees try hard to accomplish a goal, this means that he or she is putting forth an effort to accomplish a certain task. It is important for leaders to attain skills and training to obtain success in the workplace (Saylor Academy, 2012).
