The research process is foundational to every scholar aspiring to obtain a doctoral degree. Scholars develop knowledge through investigations whether generating new theories or applying the research to solve business problems. Quantitative research plays an essential role justifying research and testing theories, and qualitative research is good for discovery (Park & Park, 2016).

How Has Your Learning From This Experience Influenced What You Will Do Going Forward Through Your Doctoral Study Process?

The way in which this course has influenced my future work is invaluable. With this course I was able to understand the complexity of the research process and how I must develop my doctoral study, starting with the foundation of the study.

Now, I know that based on the research topic, the target population and the purpose of the study I must choose the methodology, the approach, and the design of the study. For instance, when I started to read about research methods, I was sure that the best option for me would be the mixed methodology. However, once I understood better the research process, I realized that although it is true that it can provide a deeper answer to the research question, it can be time-consuming too.

Also, I learned that the specific business problem is one of the main components of the doctoral study since it provides a purpose to the study (Walden University, 2016). It is essential that the specific business problem aligns with the purpose statement, and the research question using the same words because these elements are the foundation of the study (Walden University, 2016).

On the other hand, besides the feedback that we received from the instructor, I had the opportunity not only to receive feedback from my fellow scholars but also to know their work which enriched my learning. Now, I feel more prepared to develop my doctoral study, but at the same time, I am aware that I have a lot of work to do.

What Areas of Weaknesses Can You Build Upon Going Forward Into Your Doctoral Study?

I know that I have many windows of opportunity to get my final goal. For instance, I need to develop my research skills since I have not been involved in the research process. Also, I am working to improve my writing to reach an academic level. Both of these skills are essential for developing a doctoral study; therefore, I will need to focus on improving them. I understand that an essential part of the research process is doing an extensive literature review of my research topic. On the other hand, one of my main weaknesses is time management; I need to improve my control of time by following specific schedules for my activities.

What Opportunities Have You Identified for Promoting Positive Social Change Based on Your Increased Understanding?

As DBA students we need to develop a doctoral study that meets not only with the criteria of Walden University but also with the quality of being applied business research that positively affects social change. As an independent scholar, I will be responsible for checking the assessment of the criteria above mentioned, without forgetting to consider the feasibility of the study (Saunders, Lewis, & Thornhill, 2015).

Businesses are the engines of the economies, and therefore of the well-being of the participants in those economies. By providing information to solve a business problem, we can impact our social environment since enterprises are sources of employment; thus, the success of those businesses impacts the welfare of their workers and their families, consequently to society as a whole.

What Further Questions do You Still Have About the Doctoral Research Process?

I consider that I have learned a lot about the research process which allows me to start developing my doctoral study. However, I am struggling with the choice of the research methodology mainly because even when I was considering to do quantitative research to test a relationship between financial variables and the sustainability of SMEs, I am not sure about the availability of the data in my country. Therefore, I am considering to do a qualitative study.
